HELPING YOUR PET

CATS: KEEPING YOURS INDOORS

Keeping your feline friend indoors is a key factor in keeping them safe and healthy while also keeping wildlife safe from them. When allowed outside your cat is at risk for a number of serious contagious diseases such at FIV, FeLV, Rabies. They are also likely to come in contact with parasites like giardia, coccidia, fleas, ticks, etc. As a shelter we hear many sad incidences involving predator animals like Coyotes, Owls, Eagles. Even dogs and other outdoor cats who may seriously harm or even take the life of your kitty. Cars are the other evil that cats can fall victim to.

Will your kitty be happy inside? Will they live a fulfilled live stuck inside? Absolutely! CASA knows this well since cats who come to the shelter live loose indoors with no access to the outdoors. We receive many cats who have clearly lived their lives outdoors. Some show the scars of that too. After a short transition period, the mass majority truly enjoy the safety of life inside. There are many enrichment items you can use for indoor cats if your kitty needs more to do. Cat grass, large cat trees, cat wall shelves, fish tanks with secure lids, kitty toys, catnip, remote control mice, laser pointers, and more.

You may also want to create a "Catio" for your indoor cat so they have a secured outside area to lounge around or play in. They can be as simple as an old used dog run (with a secure top) attached to the side of your home with a cat door or window with direct access of the unit. A lock on the man door of the dog run will allow you to clean or upgrade the area inside, while keeping others from opening it inappropriately. There is another product known as the "cat fence" where a cat-proof addition is added to the top of your fully fences yard border. This keeps cats from being able to get over the fence. Owls may still pose a risk with this type of enclosure.

INAPPROPRIATE POTTYING

If your dog or cat is suddenly having issues there is likely a reason. One of the most common reasons for inappropriate urine elimination is urinary tract infections and/or crystals. Both are simple to diagnose with a urinalysis at your vet clinic. CASA gets a number of animals who end up surrendered to the shelter, because they are suddenly pottying on things they shouldn't be or outside of their litter box or yard. Our first step after hearing these symptoms is a urinalysis and it should be your first step too. They cannot tell you when it hurts to go, so they are forced to try and get your attention. It could simply hurt too much to make it to where they should be going, also.

Cats are very clean animals by nature. If their litter box is not kept really clean they will not want to use it. Picking up around the house to eliminate piles of clothes or other items will also help. Maybe something in your home has changed? A new child, spouse, pet, home, or a human suffering from stress themselves can also leave your pet stressed. They feed off you and their surroundings. Have a serious sit down with yourself and assess any possible changes to the world around you and your pet, it may lead you to a reason your animal is acting out if it is not medical related
